The not-for-profit sector is a key enabler in society in terms of impact for a wide array of citizens. Given its prominence there is an obligation upon the sector’s leaders to work closely with their boards and other stakeholders in three key modalities.
The Fiduciary Modality…where increasing expectations by stakeholders mandates the stewardship of the organization’s assets and resources in a way that demonstrates both a sound understanding of fiduciary oversight and risk intelligence.
The Strategic Modality... the work of the board is to enable strategic direction-setting in close partnership with the senior executive team so that the accomplishments of the organization are aligned with its vision and mission with the longer term horizon in mind. Here, the definition of success is cross-referenced to others in the sector engaged in enabling community impact, and thereby, allowing for the chiseling of the value proposition at a strategic, rather than the operational level.
The Generative Modality... The generative work of leaders is at the core of developing a sense of purpose of why these talented and influential members of the stakeholder community choose to devote their energies and resources to this vital sector. It is within this realm that the board and management teams are able to become reflective by utilizing new insights to develop new patterns of deliberation to uncover novel ways of engaging the myriad of opportunities that are presented to the organization over time.
