INSPIRATIONS STUDIO: An art-based micro business incubator for low-income women

Inspirations was established in 1994, as a woman's craft/artisan collective by providing under-housed/homeless women an opportunity to participate in meaningful economic activity, by providing direct access to the market place for women working with handmade crafts.  Since 2001, Inspirations Studio has been a program of Sistering, a women's agency serving homeless, marginalized and low-income women in Toronto.

Presenters  

Theresa Morin, Program Coordinator,will provide an overview of Inspirations Studio's social enterprise model. 

 

Victoria Gudgeon, Studio Facilitator,will discuss the day-to-day operations of the studio

A major part of movement building is lots of meetings. Meetings can be inspiring, hellish, or somewhere in between. The quality of a meeting depends a lot on good facilitation. Facilitators aren’t supposed to run the show, and they do more than keep track of who wants to speak. Come learn and share strategies for fostering good communication, equity, active listening and effective decision making for meetings of all shapes and sizes.

Location: University of Toronto St George Campus (Room location is given upon registration.)

Trainers

Leah Henderson is a long-time Toronto organizer.
Jessica Bell is a lecturer at Ryerson University and a trainer with the Ruckus Society.

Suggested donation: organizations and wage-earners, $20; unwaged, $10. No one turned away for lack of funds.

Presenters

Kenn Ross, Manager, will introduce the program and discuss the challenges to its operation and sustainability.

Melanie Ferris will discuss her experience as a loan recipient. Melanie is a business woman specializing in plain language communication services.  She is a past winner of Miziwe Biik's Business Woman of the Year Award.

Co-operative Conference and Spirit Awards Gala

The annual  Co-operative Conference and Spirit Awards Gala will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, ON. The first session begins at 9.00am. Cocktail reception starts at 4.30pm and the Spirit Awards Gala begins at 6.00pm.

 

 OCTOBER 7, 2011 IS THE LAST DAY FOR YOU TO CATCH THE EARLY BIRD SAVINGS.  Prices increase on October 8, and again October 18.
